Nathan Barnatt Rocks! in Yelle's Comme Un Enfant (Freaks Remix) & Madeon's Pop Culture

Why have I not heard of Nathan Barnatt till now? This guy is great!

Look, this isn't going to become the All The World's Nutty Dancers blog but I am so busy sorting out my other business that I haven't been able to do my readers justice. That won't always be the case but, till then, posting stuff that's just too cool not to post will be the game.

I do like him best when he's wilding out. The repetitive side-to-side stuff will wear thin after awhile. Still, Barnatt's a lot of fun.

Mashable has a bit more background.

Girl Walk // All Day: 71 Minute Dance/Music Video to Girl Talk's All Day

Girl Walk // All Day Trailer [Source: Girl Walk // All Day]

I wrote about a 71 minute dance-music video over at Hypebot called Girl Walk // All Day. It's a dancing in public space tale featuring the All Day album by Girl Talk and premieres December 8th in Brooklyn, NY. However, it's also going to be released online in segments.

Director Jacob Krupnick posted an 8 minute video of initial footage shot on the Staten Island Ferry featuring dancer Anne Marsen whose improvisational combination of dance styles is considered a good match for Girl Talk's mashups of other people's music.

This video was used in a Kickstarter campaign that raised around 5 times as much as requested resulting in $24,817 in funding to develop the full video. I think this is a very cool project that will be getting a lot more attention in the days ahead.

Winning Videos from 2011 Dance Your Ph.D. Contest

The winners of the 2011 Dance Your Ph.D. contest were announced back in late October but I just found out about it and I couldn't resist posting:

"Science's fourth annual "Dance Your Ph.D." contest [is] a competition that recognizes the best dance interpretations of scientific doctoral work...The rules of the contest were simple: Each dance had to be based on a scientist's Ph.D. research, and that scientist had to be part of the dance."

This year's contest had 53 entries from all over the world, too many to post here but definitely worth a look.  The videos on this post are the four finalists with the grand prize winner, Joel Miller, at the top.

I think this is such a great idea and I'm glad to see Science giving it a highly visible platform.  I only found out about it recently via dancer friends sharing the news on Facebook.

Looking back at my own Ph.D. experience at Ohio State University, I remember that people in my interdisciplinary Cultural Studies program who were involved in dance and movement studies would often raise the question, "Why can't we dance our dissertations?"

While some would occasionally do alternative presentations in addition to a written dissertation and oral defense, I find it kind of amusing that it was a scientist and science writer who actually popularized the idea of dancing your Ph.D. with a series of videos from doctoral candidates in the sciences!

Big ups to John Bohannon and all the participants!

Floor Kids: B-Boy O-Live vs B-Boy Nugs [by Jonathan Ng & Kid Koala]

Floor Kids: B-Boy O-Live vs. B-Boy Nugs [Source: kidkoalaproductions]

This animated bboy battle came out at least as far back as 2006. I was checking out a studio video from some of the kids associated with World of Dance and remembered this animated series. It featues music by Kid Koala and The Slew with animation by Jonathan Ng.

There are actually two shorter animations featuring each of the characters solo. You can check for that at Ill Moves, my old hip hop dance blog.

DANCELEN(D)S Drops New Videos: Supernatural, 2011 Reel, Lulu Frost Teaser for MyHabit.com

Supernatural [Source: DANCELEN(D)S]

Looks like I timed my return to dance blogging perfectly! DANCELEN(D)S released three videos last week including:

Supernatural

Editor: Eleni Brousta
Producer: Jennifer Madison
Director: Ezra Peace
Track: Trentemoller's Take Me Into Your Skin

The 2011 Reel offers a look at the range of cool stuff these people are up to. They ain't playin'!

DANCELEN(D)S has an interesting mix of artistic and commercial work though the lines are pretty blurry given the artistic nature of the commercial work.  For example, the video below is a "40 second teaser" for MyHabit.com, an Amazon luxury flash sale site that's now open to anyone with an Amazon account.

MyHabit.com/Lulu Frost Teaser

The teaser features jewelry designs by Lulu Frost.  It's directed by Erin Judd and stars Martina Heimann.  Lots more credits at YouTube.

What a great welcome back!

Beyonce & Team Are Straight Up Ripoff Artists!

Beyonce vs. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker [Source: StuBru]

The above video reveals such a blatant ripoff of the work of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and associates that I find it truly annoying to read headlines such as "Beyoncé Accused of Plagiarism Over Video". But playing it safe is what the mainstream media does and speaking the truth is the role of the non-MSM blogger!

How's that for summing up the difference between MSM blogging and true, independent blogging?

Here's the statement from De Keersmaeker who definitely takes the high ground.

Beyonce Billboard Awards 2011 VS Lorella Cuccarini 2010
[Source: PopTopicTV]

Not sure how I missed the news back in the spring of Beyonce and team's ripoff of Lorella Cuccarini as illustrated in the above video.

Why do rich people think they can take whatever they want? Maybe because we let them do it. Is it time for an Occupy Dance movement?

Just shaking my head as I reenter the dance blogging scene and wondering if I should keep giving Beyonce so much coverage.
